One of the Greatest Men I’ve Ever Known, Besides my Dad

Pandora current song: Wherever You Will Go, by The Calling

George F. Garlick is a man of principle and moral values. He grew up having just barely enough money. At an early age, he became the sole provider for the family. An incredibly talented and brilliant man, George received his bachelor’s degree at South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, master’s degree from the University of Southern California in 1960, and doctorate from Iowa State University in 1962. George is the founder, CEO, and Chairman of the Board of Holosonic, Inc., founded in 1969. He is also the President and Founder/Partner of Garlick Enterprises, Inc., Holographic Engineering LLC, Stevens Center Business Park and Advanced Imaging Technology, which was selected as the best new radiology company by the 80,000 member Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) in 2002.

George was instrumental as a founder in the formation of the Tri City Science and Technology Park Association. He was virtually the first president and former professor of Washington State University Tri Cities. He has also been influential by sponsoring numerous organizations in Tri Cities. He was named Tri Citian of the Year in 2007 out of 300,000 people and has won numerous entrepreneur awards. George holds two patents in the field of Nuclear Instrumentation, a patent in the instrumentation for Geological Testing, and 12 patents or patents pending in the field of holography. He is also a Lifetime Contributor of Tech’s Alumni Association.

With all of this said, George has accomplished a lot in his life. His first greatest characteristic is that of a role model. He lives the life of a man who puts everyone else first. Always. George is worth millions, but if one looked in his previous office, it wouldn’t look so. He never gloats about his achievements, but has a healthy sense of pride when talking about what his ‘family’ has done together. To George, his business partners are family, just as much so as his blood family.

George holds dearly a great attitude and genuine appreciation for the people around him. His attitude never takes a pit stop no matter what life throws at him. From health issues to hiccups in business plans, George always walks in a room with a contagious smile. He stops to talk to everyone every morning to tell them how awesome they are and how great of a job they are doing. He makes sure there are no problems or questions and then goes on with his day. He continues his joyful comments every time he passes by someone.

George deals with issues and problems in a mature and kind manner. He always listens to what people say even if he may not completely agree. He has a brilliant mind and a great skill for his business. He knows the ins and outs of everyone else’s business too, like banking, law, real estate, the works. This way he can leverage knowledge over finaglers who try to pull a fast one.

The forth is challenge. George can NEVER stop thinking about what else he can get his hands into whether it’s more community service, business opportunities, or ways to meet new people. As a seventy-five year old man, he has more energy than most people combined which is saying a lot. George is constantly challenging us to be the best they can be in all ways. For example, as a twenty-year-old female undergraduate, I was asked to manage around six grown men for a summer on a park project. We created a five-acre park from the ground up and I had to make sure those men kept busy and finished by deadline. As a result, I was George’s youngest manager, but he challenged me because he knew I could do it. The first summer I worked for George, I ended up working on the account to bring Starbucks to the Business Park. As a non-internship job, I experienced a lot of different kinds of opportunities because George trusted that I could get the job done with quality in a timely manner. This trust and challenge definitely shaped and encouraged me and continues to do so.

The final characteristic that makes George great is his way of thanking those around him. George loves celebrating whenever he can, so birthdays are a prime target. His philosophy is if we don’t celebrate the smallest victories, we’ll always be waiting for something bigger or better and won’t enjoy the small things in life. He just goes out of his way to let people know how much he appreciates them by his comments and character. He makes sure his people are taken care of, even if they don’t ask for it. George is truly an amazing man with an endless heart.

This is why I endured the worst summer of all. As a person from Generation Y born after 1981, I tend to value teamwork, a mutually respectful atmosphere and being trusted. Working for George has been extremely inspirational and one of the greatest joys in my life.

Live boldly challenging status quo!
